P12 - Quantification of epigenetic bases and oxidative lesions in lung tissues

The Carell group investigates the formation of epigenetic nucleosides in the genome. Such bases are formed or degraded in the genome of higher organisms in response to environmental stress. The result is a changing epigenetic transcriptional control. The group is using high end chemical synthesis to prepare these epigenetic bases and of isotope isomers of these and utilizes quantitative mass spectrometry techniques to precisely quantify these modified DNA bases in the genome. The group combines chemical synthesis with modern ultrasensitive analytical techniques.
