Convincing and Debating Workshop

by Natural Science.Careers

11.12.2023 - 12.12.2023 (9:00 a.m. - 05:00 p.m.)

Scientists are often in a situation where they need to discuss their findings or their need for extra funding or resources with other members of the scientific community or with the gen-eral public. Therefore, the ability to express yourself concisely and clearly, using strong ar-guments, is of utmost importance.

This interactive seminar with real-life scenarios, public speaking exercises, argumentation examples and debates will help participants successfully engage in various interactions with other scientists and non-scientists. Your Q&A sessions will never be the same again. You will disarm other people’s arguments against you now that you can look behind their facade. And last but not least, you will win on paper (e.g. research- and grant- proposals)! You will convince your boss to buy this fantastic Mass Spec.

Leading in Academia

Thursday December 5th - Friday December 6th, 2019

Learning Goals:

  • Acquire a leadership framework in the academic context
  • Challenge assumptions about what it means to be a leader
  • Develop a personal leadership style
  • Learn how to influence others (without authority)

Training Method:

This workshop is designed to be relevant to the broad spectrum of leadership situations. There are many implicitly held beliefs about what makes a good leader. A basic premise of this workshop is that, beyond common preconceptions, a broad array of skills is needed to lead effectively. This workshop will enable participants to identify their strengths and to understand the different manifestations of leadership.

Early career professionals, in both industry and academia, are often in a “sandwich position,” which necessarily means that they must be able to lead and manage effectively in all directions (upward, downward, and lateral). They lead their subordinates and team members, but they also need to successfully influence their colleagues and their supervisors. In order to effectively exercise their influence on others, individuals must also develop their ability to lead themselves. To help participants successfully prepare for these challenges and identify their own style, scientifically established leadership approaches with be presented and discussed.

Posture for confidence & Stress management

Thursday May 16th, 23rd & 27th 2019

In this workshop we will first learn to observe our own posture. We will then discuss how it can be individually corrected. Next, we will investigate the relationship between body position, confidence and voice. The final part will include quick and effective techniques to release daily work-related physical strain from body parts that are often tight, like wrists and shoulders.
Further, we will learn distinct kinds of relaxation and confidence-boosting methods based on mastering breath and meditation. Each method will be explained and practiced and we will apply those methods also under simulation of different scenarios.

The sessions build on each other, so it is in your interest to attend all sessions, but it is possible to attend individual sessions.

Trainer: Dr. Ruth Adam

Time: 5.00 – 7.00 pm

Venue: Pettenkoferstr. 14, F 1.20
